Resident, Knyveton, White Post Road, Bodicote Crossing to be provided to pacify the parents and teachers at the school.
Crossing of this type is likely to cause tailbacks at peak hours possibly onto Oxford-Banbury Road, causing frustration to drivers attempting to use White Post Road. |
It is to provide a safer crossing facility for vulnerable road users i.e. small children, in a potentially dangerous environment. It is also to be provided as a Better Ways To School measure to assist with the already well established "walking bus" where groups of children are escorted to school by volunteer parent "drivers". Pelican crossings have the advantage over Zebra crossings as far as accommodating traffic flows, in that during the "do not cross" phase, traffic is allowed to proceed freely. With a Zebra, as soon as someone indicates a wish to cross, the traffic should stop. With a lot of people wishing to cross, the pedestrians can dominate the traffic for potentially long periods, thus causing tailbacks. A Pelican will alternate the flows and therefore be less likely to cause such potentially long queues. |

Cherwell District Council Support the crossing. |

Thames Valley Police The measure will benefit the school and is implemented presumably by this specific motivation. |

County Councillor Keith Mitchell This type of crossing is too expensive, unnecessary and a simpler form could be used. |
Noted. See comments in 1 above regarding advantages of a pelican crossing over zebra crossing and safety of vulnerable road users. |
