6. Stopping Up: Roman Way and Garsington Road, Oxford

Mr Patrick Simpson (Cyclox) wishes to draw the Cabinet’s attention to the railway bridge just North East of BMW. Two photographs of the bridge are attached, together with a map showing the location of the bridge. (download as .doc file) His email is reproduced below:

"Considering they built an embankment for the railway line, the bridge must have been built to take the railway over some old road, path or lane. On the north side, there is a strip of land about 5 metres wide (between the farm field and a brook) which reaches Oxford Road. It looks like there was a lane, and there are 2 concrete blocks that look like they were put there to stop anyone using it.

I don't know if it's part of BMW - there are no railway tracks left on it, so no safety issue. There's a power cable underground, but there's cables underground everywhere. People walk their dogs round there, at least.

It strikes me that, if BMW are willing and able to move their fence in 3 metres and build a cycle track round the west side of their site (all at their own expense), I don't see why it wouldn't be possible (and cheaper) to establish a bridleway going round the east side and under this bridge".
