ITEM TIC9
TRANSPORT
IMPLEMENTATION COMMITTEE – 4 MARCH 2004
OXFORD,
MERRIVALE SQUARE – PROPOSED ONE-WAY SYSTEM
Report
by Head of Transport
Introduction
- This report considers
the responses received to a public consultation on the proposed introduction
of a ‘one-way’ system in Merrivale Square, Oxford (Annex 1) (download
as .doc file).
Background
- A request was
received from the Oxford Waterside Residents’ Association to introduce
a ‘one-way’ system in Merrivale Square. The Association was concerned
that vehicles travelling in opposite directions around the Square were
being involved in near miss incidents.
Consultation
- An informal consultation
was carried out to gauge the general views of residents. Letters were
sent to 165 residents from whom 14 replies were received. From these
replies 9 supported the proposal and 5 objected.
- Formal consultation
was carried out over a period of four weeks from 24 October 2003. Overall
200 letters were sent to residents informing them of the proposal. Only
10 responses were received and they are set out at Annex 2 (download
as .rtf file) with officer comment.
- Only three respondents
supported the proposal and the overall response to the consultation
disappointing. With such a low level of support I consider that the
proposal should not be continued, particularly as there have been no
accidents recorded over the past five years.
RECOMMENDATIONS
- The Committee
is RECOMMENDED not to implement a ‘one-way’ system in Merrivale Square.
