BETTER WAYS TO SCHOOL: STEEPLE ASTON – DR RADCLIFFE’S SCHOOL

Report by the Assistant Director (Transport Development)

Introduction

  1. Dr Radcliffe’s CE Primary School was successful in being included in the 2001/02 Better Ways to School Programme. The aims were to work in partnership with the school to identify measures to encourage safer and more sustainable travel to the school.
  2. A series of measures have been identified that involve changes in and around the school entrance and the improvement of footway facilities on the approach to the school along Paines Hill (Annex 1) (download as .doc file).
  3. These proposals were the subject of an initial consultation that involved representatives of the school, school governing body, County, District and Parish Councils in order to gain support for the works prior to carrying out a public consultation.
  4. Following public consultation no objections were received to the proposals at the school site but objections were received for the remainder. In order to make use of the school holiday period authority is being sought to implement the works at the school with amendments and further consultation carried out on the other sites, the results of which will be the subject of a future report to this Committee for approval. That action is supported by the Parish Council.
  5. Proposals for School and Entrance

  6. The works are summarised below and details are shown on drawing BPN742/10/B3256A which will be on display at the meeting:

    • extend the footway adjacent to the school perimeter hedge;
    • provide a designated crossing point;
    • improve cycle and pedestrian facilities within the school premises.

Environmental Implications

  1. The improvements at the school will serve to provide better access around the school entrance and regulate the movements of children walking and cycling to school and parents making the school run.
  2. Financial and Staff Implications

  3. The construction cost of the school site improvements is £10,000 which will be funded from the Better Ways to School budget.
  4. There are no staff implications associated with this report.
  5. RECOMMENDATIONS

  6. The Committee is RECOMMENDED to approve the proposals for measures to encourage safer travel to Dr Radcliffe’s School, Steeple Aston as shown on drawing BPN742/10/B3256A.
