ITEM TIC11-
ANNEX 1
TRANSPORT
IMPLEMENTATION COMMITTEE –
6 DECEMBER 2002
BAYWORTH,
SUNNINGWELL TO ABINGDON CYCLE ROUTE
Assessing
the potential of the Bayworth, Sunningwell to Abingdon Route
- It is a relatively
short distance to cycle from these settlements to Abingdon town centre
(4.5km in total from Bayworth, 3.75km in total from Sunningwell).
- There are currently
no facilities for cyclists and pedestrians along the Quarry Road between
Bayworth and Sunningwell. The speed limit on this road is derestricted
between the two settlements. The existing route is therefore unattractive
to potential and existing cyclists and pedestrians.
- All local facilities
(except the Baptist Church) are situated in Sunningwell i.e. the Parish
Church, cemetery, village hall, public house, primary school, recreation
ground and cricket club. As a result and for road safety reasons, Bayworth
residents are heavily dependent on cars to get between these two places.
- The proposed route
from Sunningwell to Abingdon Town Centre is mostly traffic free. The
existing surface of the bridleway needs improving. There are two distinct
sections where it is currently unsurfaced. There are also several surfaced
sections that need to be repaired. The existing route is therefore currently
unattractive to potential and existing cyclists.
- The proposed cycle
route would link in with the existing network of cycle routes in Abingdon
including the Sustrans National Cycle Network.
- There are a considerable
number of useful destinations in Abingdon that residents of Bayworth
and Sunningwell could reach by bicycle e.g. schools, places of work,
shops, libraries and leisure facilities.
