EXECUTIVE – 8 JULY 2003

WOOD GREEN AND SPRINGFIELD SCHOOLS, WITNEY

OUTLINE PROJECT APPRAISAL APPRAISAL NO. ED 594

NAME OF SCHEME: WOOD GREEN SCHOOL, WITNEY – EXTENSIONS

START YEAR: 2003/04

BASIS OF ESTIMATE: Initial Cost Estimate

  1. INTRODUCTION AND DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT
  2. This project appraisal is for the latest major building works at Wood Green School arising from new housing developments in North East Witney. The works which form part of this latest scheme, are a mix of new buildings and refurbished areas.

The scheme comprises a new 2 storey building which will accommodate on the ground floor a new dining and kitchen facility, and on the first floor a new 6th form teaching and social area. In addition the existing staff room will be refurbished to become a new art room and a new staff room will be provided in the existing 6th form area. New PE changing rooms and an office for the PE staff and a covered walkway linking the new buildings to the existing ones will also be included in the scheme.

  3. JUSTIFICATION AND ASSESSMENT OF NEED
  4. The LEA has a statutory responsibility to provide "roofs over heads" to meet pupil growth, which in this case arises from the 900 additional houses constructed on the Madley Park development.

  5. OTHER OPTIONS
  6. The only other option is to provide the school with temporary classrooms. As the increase in pupil numbers will be sustained for many years, temporary classrooms would be an inappropriate response to the teaching, dining and catering needs of the school.

  7. FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS (see attached Resource Appraisal)
  8. The estimated total capital cost of these extensions, inclusive of fees, is £2,100,000. These costs will be met by ACG.

The revenue costs (including day to day and structural repairs) will be met from the school’s delegated budget under the Council’s Fair Funding arrangements.

  9. OTHER RESOURCE IMPLICATIONS
  10. This proposal has no staff or land acquisition implications.

  11. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATIONS

The building work will be carried out in accordance with the requirements of the planning permission for the development, which will ensure that environmental and design issues are taken into account.
