Safeguarding our communities

Reducing the risk of travel and to promote the awareness of road safety issues among all road users. To achieve this we will implement a programme of casualty reduction and community safety schemes at sites throughout Oxfordshire, undertake a comprehensive road safety education, training and publicity programme and participate in the Thames Valley Safer Roads partnership.

Complete 25 road improvements targeted to prevent at least 6 collisions involving death or serious injury in 2002 and in future years (there were 421 in 2001) as we work towards our target of a 40% reduction in deaths and serious injuries on our roads by 2010.

Work on the Casualty Reduction Programme is progressing well and it is hoped that these targets will be met.

Carry out a road safety education, training and publicity programme that will provide the opportunity of pedestrian training to 8000 families with 2 year old children and provide cycle training for 4000 children.

Pedestrian training: the packs have been passed to Health Visitors and will be passed to families as planned.

Cycle training – due to staffing difficulties the target has had to be revised from 4,000 to 3,400 children.
