ITEM CA9
CABINET - 26 MAY 2009
TRANSFORM OXFORD
Report by Head of Transport
Introduction
1. On 20 October 2008 Oxfordshire County Council launched Transform Oxford, which aims to improve the pedestrian experience in Oxford. An improvement scheme for Queen Street is included in Stage 1 of these plans. The scheme will see the removal of all bus stops from Queen Street, apart from stops west of Bonn Square, and a reduction in bus flows of about a third. This will enable an increase in the amount of space for pedestrians (by reducing the amount of space for buses) and an improvement to the quality of the street environment.
2. The reduction in the number of buses using the street will enable pedestrians to move more freely across and along the street. The impacts of the scheme on users and on nearby streets such as St Aldate’s were considered fully in the report to Cabinet Member Decisions (Transport) on 23rd April 2009.
Financial and Staff Implications
3. Funding for the proposals are
included in the Capital Programme for 2009/10. There are no additional staff
resources required to progress the project. A financial project appraisal No.
H191 is shown as Annex 1 (download as .doc file)
RECOMMENDATION
4. The Cabinet is RECOMMENDED to APPROVE the project appraisal No. H191 in Annex 1.
