CABINET – 20 SEPTEMBER 2005

FAIR TRADE AND THE USE OF LOCAL PRODUCE

Summary of Current Catering Arrangements and use of Fairly Traded and Local Produce at a Selection of Council Sites

Clarendon House

Use Meco filter coffee as part of a contract set up for their coffee machines. Standard tea, coffee and sugar is ordered through Lyreco. ‘Bunnies’ catering based in Cowley are used to order meeting food.

County Hall

Food orders for meetings and events held in County Hall can either be made on site through the Common Hall Café (although this is a limited service) or any external catering company can be used. Café and meeting drinks are changing to Fairtrade tea and coffee from September. (Drinks are also supplied to Macclesfield House).

Cricket Road

A range of catering companies are used for conferences and meetings. These include caterers from the Social & Health Care based Sure Start in Rose Hill, where parents prepare and sell food as a business enterprise. Ann’s Munchies are also used, a company which uses local, seasonal produce. The Cricket Road Centre uses fairly traded tea and coffee for meeting drinks. This change took place in response to staff requests. Orders are made through Lyreco, the stationary contractor for Oxfordshire County Council; costs are met through the central budget.

Foxcombe Court

There are six on site vending machines with drinks, confectionery and crisps for staff use. For meetings catering the local Abingdon based company ‘Let’s do Lunch’ is most often used, although staff are free to order food from any company.

Speedwell House

There are no restrictions on the choice of caterer, but the majority of catering is provided by ‘Spires’, an Oxford based business who do not have a fair trade or ethical policy but do try to buy local produce where possible. They supply bottled water and disposable plates and cups unless requested not to. Fairly traded tea and coffee are not currently used for meeting drinks at Speedwell House
