EXECUTIVE – 3 APRIL 2002

CYCLE AND PEDESTRIAN FACILITIES – AUDLETT DRIVE

Report by Director of Environmental Services

Introduction

  1. This report seeks approval to convert the footway along Audlett Drive, Abingdon to a shared use cycle/pedestrian facility.
  2. Background

  3. As part of the Abingdon Integrated Transport Strategy, a network of cycle and pedestrian facilities have been identified along the peripheral routes. One of the first stages proposed to be undertaken in this scheme is the Audlett Drive cycle track. This requires the widening of the footway into the verge to create the cycle track and formal conversion of the footway to a shared use cycle/pedestrian facility. Future work planned along Audlett Drive includes the introduction of pedestrian refuges and advisory on-carriageway cycle lanes.
  4. The scheme links existing cycle and pedestrian facilities adjacent to the new Leisure and Tennis Centre and extends the cycle track from there to the junction of Twelve Acre Drive in North Abingdon and southwards to the existing Toucan crossing by Thames View leading towards the Town Centre. A key plan is attached
  5. Consultation

  6. Consultation was undertaken from 11 January to 1 February 2002.
  7. No objections were received for the conversion of the footway to a cycle track. The detailed construction plans (Nos 2013-02c, 2013-05a, 0201-02, 0201-03 and 0201-04) will be available in the Members’ Resource Centre and on display at the meeting.
  8. Financial and Staff Implications

  9. The cycle scheme is funded from the Capital Budget and the work can be accommodated within existing staff resources.
  10. RECOMMENDATIONS

  11. The Executive is RECOMMENDED to approve the conversion (under Sections 65 and 66 of the Highways Act 1980) of the footway in Audlett Drive from Thames View northwards to Radley Road to shared use footway/cycle track.
