The crossing will be on a slope and vehicles will make more noise stopping and starting uphill. |
There will be more noise from stopping and starting, but fewer vehicles will be able to accelerate with high revs up the hill, therefore the overall effect on noise will be close to neutral. |
Two large lorries can not pass each other on the slight bend 30 metres south of the crossing site; this could cause following southbound vehicles to come to a halt on the crossing, which would be hazardous when the signals changed. |
The halting of vehicles on a crossing happens frequently in larger urban areas (although drivers should leave enough space in front of them to avoid it), and it is not a significant hazard. Large vehicles approaching the slight bend will generally be travelling slower with the pelican crossing being nearby, and therefore the risks of kerb-mounting and wing-mirror clashes will be reduced. |
The crossing is not needed because there is a School Crossing Patrol at school travel times and there is much less traffic at other times. |
The pelican crossing will still be useful to people crossing outside school travel times. At present some deliberately time their journeys on foot to be within the periods that the School Crossing Patrol is there. |
