CABINET MEMBER FOR SCHOOLS IMPROVEMENT –

5 February 2008

ROSE HILL PRIMARY SCHOOL OXFORD – OUTCOME OF FORMAL CONSULTATION ABOUT A POSSIBLE

‘FRESH START’ BID.

Supplementary report by Director of Children, Young People & Families

Consultation outcomes

1.                  In addition to the responses detailed in the main report, a further 13 written responses have been received, 8 from parents (1 of whom is also a member of staff), 1 from a member of staff, 1 from a governor of Rose Hill (who is also a county councillor), 1 from the chair of governors of another school and 2 ‘others’ (not local residents or governors of the school). Of the 13 additional responses 11 support the proposal to close Rose Hill School and replace it with a ‘Fresh Start’ school and 2 oppose this.

2.                  Among the reasons stated for supporting the proposal were the following:

§         “it would lift the moral [sic] of the children, teachers and parents to have a nicer school environment to work in.”

§         “A brighter future for the children.”

§         “If its [sic] for the children I support it as thats [sic] what school is all about isn’t it”

§         “…hampered by the physical structure of the buildings.”

§         “The residents of Rose Hill deserve all efforts to raise their expectations of education and life.”

3.  Of the two responses opposing the ‘Fresh Start’, one from a parent appears to be on the basis of a misunderstanding about continuing educational provision on the current site: “…walking easy to reach….for family have pushchair and children.” The other, from another parent, offers recommendations about how shortcomings in the current buildings could be addressed e.g. “Leaks can be mended by roofer, heating can be mended by plumber.”

Progress with ‘Fresh Start’ bid

4.         A definitive reply from the DCSF in respect of both the ‘Fresh Start’ bid and whether a competition is required is still awaited.
