Report

Establishment of an Oxford Academy and Closure of Peers Community College

A copy is attached to the signed copy of this decision.

Cabinet Member’s Comments

Councillor Waine stated that the Oxford Academy would be a major step forward for Oxfordshire and for the Peers Community College and the community of Blackbird Leys.

If approval was given to establish the Academy it would be of great advantage to young people in the wider community and provide a continuation of the regeneration scheme that this Council had started with Primary Schools. He looked forward to future academies working in partnership with Oxfordshire County Council.

Decision

Having regard to the arguments and options set out in the documentation before me, the representations made to me and the further considerations set out above, I confirm my decisions on this matter as follows:

  1. to ask officers to support the Expression of Interest being prepared for an Oxford Academy to be established on the site of what is now Peers Community School; and
  2. to agree, in principle, to propose the closure of Peers Community College, subject to subsequent confirmation by the Cabinet, and with the support of the existing school and its governing body, should the DfES Feasibility Study conclude that an Academy be established.

Signed

Cabinet Member for Schools Improvement
